WHEN: October 9-25, 2025

WHAT: The Canadian Opera Company presents Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck.

Beloved for its noble simplicity, Carsen’s stylized interpretation of the haunting Greek myth of Orpheus is minimalist, stark, and experimental.

The divinely gifted Orpheus draws on exquisite musical talents to beg the gods for the return of his recently deceased wife, Euridice. Permitted to bring her back from the Underworld on the condition that he not look at her or explain why—at the risk of losing her forever—Orpheus embarks on a journey that proves, once again, the enduring power of love.

Featuring: Iestyn Davies as Orfeo; Anna-Sophie Neher as Euridice; Catherine St-Arnaud as Amore.

Bernard Labadie, Conductor

WHERE: Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, 145 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON

WHAT: The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra presents “Nikki Plays Beethoven.” Featuring JoAnn Falletta, conductor; Nikki Chooi, violin.

Verdi’s angst-filled overture to the tangled and tragic operatic tale La Forza del Destino opens the first weekend of our Beethoven Festival. The foreboding and melodramatic aspects of the piece are interspersed with sweeping lyrical motifs, resulting in a theatrical experience full of contrasts and tension.

This turbulent theme continues in the symphonic fantasy, Francesca da Rimini, Tchaikovsky’s interpretation of the eternal torment of elicit lovers as depicted in Dante’s Inferno narrative, with Francesca’s retelling of her own fraught story. BPO Concertmaster Nikki Chooi follows these selections by masterfully leading Beethoven’s monumental Violin Concerto in D major, which is celebrated for its compelling themes, dramatic structure, and improvised cadenzas.
